Carport Construction
Your key decisions about your new carport construction is looks and materials. The choices you will have to make are which material you want
for your piers, your roof structure, your roof and your floor.
The roof of your carport needs to be a good fit with your existing house roof. For example if you have a terracotta tiled roof, then you
should also seriously consider using them on your carport as well. Occasionally these materials may weather after a few years, and so matching
them may be worse that choosing an alternative you can blend. A good example of this my own carport. The house I was building my carport on had
colored roof tiles. I did not want to build a carport that had roofing structure that strong, so I chose to use a pre-finished zinc product in
the same color as the windows and gutters. This gave me a simple and yet light roof which tied into my house beautifully.
To build this roof structure I used long span Oregon beams in a near flat style. The house I was attaching it to had a pitched roof, but the
change in roofing material enabled me to get away with this. If I had chosen carport construction methods for a pitched roof the construction
would have been far more intricate, and again had I gone for a tiled roof the timber in that construction would have needed to be bigger as
well.
Your choice of upright building materials can be more imaginative by adding brick, cement block or stone into the mix. No matter the material
of choice your carport piers have to be strong enough to take the roof frame and the roofing material. Make sure you choose a style that is not
only strong, but easy to maintain and attractive.
The floor of your carport is a again an interesting carport construction choice. There are many cheap alternatives, but I find a good sturdy
floor is always beneficial. A poured concrete floor is a tried and true option Personally my favorite is brick paving as it adds a really
tasteful look to your carport floor.
